“[The Force] is an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together.” — Obi-Wan Kenobi (Kabbalist)

Come explore the connection between Torah, Tolkien, and The Force.
The same archetypal wellspring that gave rise to the Bible and the Kabbalah also inspired some of the great epics of the modern age: Gandalf’s battle with the balrog would be called yerida l’tzorech aliya [going down to rise up] in Jewish mysticism; Rey’s balancing of the Force in Star Wars Episode 9 is represented by a yellow lightsaber (harmonizing red and green/blue) and matching the color scheme of the Tree of Life in Kabbalah; the elf Galadriel’s “passing of the test” to refuse the Ring of Power demonstrates the essence of free will articulated in Jewish writings. People of any background are invited for this month-long romp through timeless stories and the wisdom therein.

Hebrew College Open Circle Jewish Learning is for learners of all backgrounds.
