Community Blog Jewish Teens Drive Meaningful Change

By Hebrew College

“A still small voice is heard…” — U-netaneh Tokef, High Holiday Liturgy

Many voices cannot be heard in our communities. Who will hear the voices of social injustice now and in years to come? Consider these numbers and a story.

49 teens | raised $46,668 | 7 grants |

The Jewish Teen Foundation of Greater Boston (JTFGB) at Hebrew College is helping to make unheard voices heard by making the meaning of mitzvoth of tzedakah, gemilut chasadim (deeds of loving-kindness) and tikkun olam (repairing the world) real for teens—teaching them to become the next generation of Jews who fight to erase societal problems and injustice through tzedakah and to become the next generation of philanthropists.

Last year, 49 teens participated in the JTFGB academically rigorous incubator program . Two teen boards, one at Hebrew College and one at Gann Academy picked two priority causes—domestic violence and mental health, and raised $46,668  to help address them. They reviewed grant applications, made decisions, and awarded 7 grants—4 to domestic violence programs and 3 to mental health initiatives.

Is JTFGB making a difference in teen’s lives? Yes! Just ask Sarah Winn.

“JTFGB was the most amazing, inspiring, and engaging experience. Growing up immersed in the Jewish community, I was taught about tzedakah, always took the time to give back, knowing that it was ofcourse important, but never fully understanding the reasoning behind it. After participating in JTFGB, I understand the significance of tzedakah, the importance of giving, and why we, as Jews, practice this. I will use all of the resources, skills and learning I have been so blessed to take away from this experience in my future endeavors.”

This year, Hebrew College is solely responsible for operating JTFGB, forming three teen boards with 70 teens in an expanded configuration of the program. Hebrew College is developing the foundation for tomorrow’s Jewish community leaders to continue to be the voice of the unheard. Hebrew College is making a difference.

How do we continue to drive meaningful change? It comes down to a number: One. It takes just one gift to make a difference—yours. Please give generously to the Hebrew College Annual Fund. If you have given already, thank you!*

The benefit of your gift will be multiplied. Between now and December 31, your contribution can help us maximize a challenge from a generous donor who has offered to match all gifts dollar-for-dollar up to $100,000. Your support can have even more impact—enabling Hebrew College to continue to nurture and energize our Jewish communities.

Todah raba. Thank you!

* Please consider a recurring monthly, quarterly, sustaining donation and including Hebrew College in your estate plan.
