Explore writers and thinkers who represent different perspectives on the nature and development of Zionism. History will be seen through poetry, biography and ideas. We will dive into the writing of five key figures with the goal of understanding the dynamic and various ways that Zionists before the creation of the state conceptualized Israel. The goal will be to get a kaleidoscopic sense of Israeli history tracing various movements. The figures that we’ll engage with are: Chaim Weitzmann, David Ben Gurion, Golda Meir, Martin Buber and A.D. Gordon.

“From “Angels in America” to “Transparent“, from “Bent” to “Yentl“, we will explore the intersection of Jewish identities and queer identities in film and television. Are these identities separate or influence each other? Do they stand in juxtaposition or do they complement each other? What does it mean for these characters to be Jewish and Queer, and how does it shape their trajectories? We will watch excerpts from these works (may contain spoilers) and analyze these questions together using biblical, contemporary and academic texts.

Each class will focus on one media example: a singular character from a film or a TV show. In this way, even if students miss a class, we all begin from the same point the following week. Between classes there will be a small amount of homework: a film or a TV episode to watch, plus a short article to read.”

the next course in the 2-year series on Rabbinics in Fall 2025 and so on to complete the full 2-year study program.

Course Description: Bible, Semester 1, Year 1 of Me’ah Classic:

The Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh, is the central text of ancient Israel and the foundational text for Judaism through the ages. You’ll examine the various biblical genres, structures, concepts, theological and historical settings of the biblical world, and then explore selected topics, often integrated with rabbinic perspectives.

This sequence balances an overview of the Hebrew Bible with focused discussion of core texts, such as the Creation stories, the binding of Isaac, the Exodus story, the revelation at Sinai and the prophetic books. You’ll analyze the primary biblical texts and secondary scholarly materials through various lenses: literary, historical-comparative, and rabbinic commentary.

While you may be familiar with the Bible from childhood, this in-depth exposure to other texts and different modes of reading will challenge you — and may well lead you to reassess some long-held views.

Jewish spiritual wisdom has put many names on the experience of encountering the divine. This course offers some unexpected insights from the Bible, rabbinic literature, and Kabbalah about what it means to give a name to the Transcendent: from the Torah’s ineffable four-letter Name to unusual metaphors, to the Kabbalists’ 72- (actually 216-) letter mystery, and beyond. This course will explore familiar and unfamiliar sources, with an emphasis on articulating and clarifying our own spiritual awareness.

Talmud study is not simply the study of Jewish law, and that’s why it is so fascinating to Jews of all affiliations. The rabbis often use the legalities as a language for articulating foundational Jewish wisdom. The stories and debates of the Talmud have become the language of Jewish thought. A page of Talmud can often help us tap into ancient Jewish language for our own spiritual growth and add to our toolbox of Jewish thought.
