The squares and swirls and marks on paper looked like musical notes to me…Music was a plane of interpretation for them, as well as it is for me.

Hebrew College’s fall art exhibit celebrating the 75th anniversary of the State of Israel, Syncopation: Lyrical Abstraction in Israeli Art (1970s), was featured in the Jewish Journal.

Journalist Penny Schwartz writes, “The collection reflects the artistic style of lyrical abstraction and an artistic movement in Israel known as New Horizon (Ofakim Hadashim), founded in 1948 by Ukrainian-Israeli artist Joseph Zaritsky, who was a mentor or teacher to many of the artists in this exhibition. Abstraction was their language.”

Syncopation will remain open until Nov. 30.  More information and gallery hours are available on the College’s website.
