Master of Jewish Liberal Studies

Jewish imagination knows no bounds. Discover your personal connection to Judaism through the creative vision of Jewish artists, poets, writers, musicians, philosophers and historians.

The Master of Jewish Liberal Studies (MJLS), designed for the adult learner, enables you to define or refine your personal Jewish journey via an interdisciplinary exploration of Jewish culture and civilization, viewed through the lens of the Jewish humanities.

Course of Study

Most students complete the MJLS entirely online; if you live in the Greater Boston area, you may select from a mix of online and on-campus courses. All students participate in the residential capstone seminar week during their last summer in the program.

The program of study includes courses in Jewish texts, both classical and modern, and Jewish thought and history—with a special emphasis on Jewish music, art and literature. All texts are provided in English translation.

Throughout your studies, you will keep a journal to record your intellectual growth and reactions to what you are learning. The program culminates in an exciting weeklong seminar—hosted in a city with strong Jewish cultural roots in the U.S., Israel or Europe—where you will study with a leading figure in the world of Jewish arts.
