Humans of Hebrew College Ulpan Success Story

By Wendy Linden

Sigmund Kharasch, M.D

“My years of Ulpan at Hebrew College continue to serve me well. A few months ago, I was called by the Hadassah organization in Australia to see if I could host a Palestinian physician for 2 weeks when she comes to Boston for a rotation in intensive care at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital. How could I say no, especially since I continue to work at Hadassah three times a year. She was amazing! What was equally amazing is that when I picked her up at the airport, we instantly began speaking Hebrew. Each day we had breakfast together, dinner, and our ‘evening tea,” which she loved. Our only conversations in English were around my family—otherwise, it was an intensive 2-week Hebrew Ulpan. Our Hebrew discussions ranged from her family, our tours of Boston together, shopping at BJs for her kids, politics, and life in Ramallah and the practice of medicine in her hospital. She was a natural fit in our home, had a great sense of humor and is a fantastic physician. Not to mention she regularly complimented my Hebrew! We share much in common including our very special language.” #HumansHC
