Music in the Holocaust—The Holocaust in Music In this course we will investigate three phenomena. First, we will track down the historical sources of Jew-hatred in the European musical community and accusations that Jews couldn’t possibly be real musicians. We will trace the efforts of the Nazi government to marginalize and evict and eventually murder Jewish musicians. We will examine musical activities in ghettos and concentration camps; Vilna’s Jews declared, “Our bodies may be enslaved, but our souls are not.” We will also hear how certain songs became anthems of resistance, giving hope and strength to the Partisans. Finally, we will listen to beautiful and moving music that was written after the war to commemorate the victims.
