Jewish learning is a lifelong journey that deepens as we grow. Exploring Jewish wisdom, history, and culture as adults can open new pathways to meaning, community, and spiritual growth. Whether through text, travel, or the arts, each path offers a unique way to engage with the richness of Jewish life and connect to something larger than ourselves.

Whether you’re rediscovering your roots, deepening a long-standing connection, or exploring something for the first time, there is no single path to Jewish learning at Hebrew College, only many meaningful ways to begin. Here are 10 inspiring ways to immerse yourself in Jewish study, creativity, and discovery. (Pictured above: Tamid travelers visit a mikveh on our Jewish Discovery Tour of Spain)

1. Learn Through Travel

There’s no better classroom than the world itself. Traveling to Israel, Morocco, Spain, the American South, or even Jewish heritage sites in your own city brings history and tradition to life. Tamid of Hebrew College’s guided international and domestic educational trips offer opportunities to explore Jewish identity, culture, and history while connecting with others on a similar journey. Consider deepening your learning by pairing your travel experience with a Tamid adult learning course about the travel destination taught by faculty who will also lead the trip.

2. Study Hebrew Language

Learning Hebrew opens doors to understanding Jewish texts and prayers, and modern Israeli culture in a more personal way., Studying Hebrew can deepen your spiritual practice and your sense of connection to the global Jewish community. Tamid of Hebrew College offers introductory Hebrew classes with the goal of decoding (learning to read), introduction to prayer and simple grammar as well as more intensive Hebrew instruction through our online Hebrew Ulpan (which offers 10 levels).

3. Tackle a Page of Talmud a Day

For those seeking intellectual challenge and spiritual depth, studying Talmud—even one page a day—can be transformative. The discipline of Daf Yomi, which Hebrew College offers adult learners, connects you to a worldwide community of learners who engage daily with ancient discussions that still resonate today.

4. Explore Jewish Perspectives on Current Events

Jewish tradition encourages us to bring ethical and moral frameworks to the pressing issues of our time. Courses or discussion groups on topics like antisemitism, immigration, or social justice help adult learners engage with Jewish ideas and values, and consider how faith intersects with civic responsibility and our experience of the modern world.

5. Begin with an Introduction to Judaism

For those new to Jewish learning or returning after time away, an “Introduction to Judaism” course offers a welcoming entry point. Hebrew College’s course covers Jewish holidays, life cycle events, beliefs, and ritual practices, offering knowledge and a building a supportive community for exploration.

6. Dive into Jewish History

Hebrew College’s Me’ah Classic program take adult learners on a two-year, 100-hour journey through Jewish history, texts, and ideas through four time periods: Biblical, Rabbinic, Medieval and Modern. This kind of deep, structured study builds a strong foundation for ongoing learning and personal enrichment.

7. GROW with a Snack

Short on time? Consider attending a one-hour online learning session with leading Jewish scholars, rabbis, educators, and community leaders. Hebrew College offers a free monthly GROW (Gather, Reflect, Observe, Wrestle) Series on a range of topics including Jewish humor, the legacy of the Enlightenment on Jewish life, Israeli poetry after October 7th, and more. Turn a weekday break into a moment of inspiration and insight.

8. Engage in Interreligious Learning

Understanding Judaism in conversation with other faiths broadens perspectives and strengthens community ties. Hebrew College’s interfaith courses—taught by Rabbi Or Rose and Rev. Dr. Rob Schenck of our Miller Center for Interreligious Leaning & Leadership and other expert faculty—highlight the shared values and unique contributions of different religious traditions, deepening both knowledge and empathy.

9. Join Book Talks with Jewish Authors

Jewish literature offers a window into history, identity, and imagination. Attend an author talk in person or online to explore new ideas and connect with others through stories that reflect the diversity of Jewish experience.

10. Experience Jewish Learning Through the Arts

Art, music, and performance are powerful vehicles for exploring Jewish themes. The arts invite adult learners to connect emotionally and spiritually in ways that words alone cannot. Attend a Hebrew College art exhibit or Soul Sounds concert and pair it with a Hebrew College Tamid adult learning course about the artistic theme to enrich your learning experience. For example, study the sefirot in conversation with Israeli art inspired by kabbalah or learn the history of Jewish Spain as inspired by work from a Jewish-Sephardic painter.
