For our second 2025 program in Hebrew College Adult Learning’s free, monthly GROW series, we examine modern midrashic responses to October 7th with Rav Rachel Adelman, Hebrew College Associate Professor of Bible.

We hope you will spend an hour with us for this and future programs in our series, to gather, reflect, observe, and wrestle with topics that will deepen your Jewish learning.

“And God’s Breath hovered over the Face of the Deep” – Modern Midrashic Responses to October 7th

Date: Wednesday, January 29, 2025 | 12-1 PM EST/9-10 AM PST | Zoom
Program: “And God’s Breath hovered over the Face of the Deep” – Modern Midrashic Responses to October 7th
Instructor: Rav Rachel Adelman
Cost: FREE

In response to ‘The Black Sabbath’ of October 7th, there was a great out-pouring of lament. In the mode of Lamentations Rabbah and the Kinot of Tisha be’Av, these modern compositions speak to the moment in classical forms. In this class, I will present two modern midrashic compositions—one by Nurit Hirschfeld-Skupinsky, a survivor from Kibbutz Nahal Oz, and the other by Liora Eilon, of Kibbutz Kfar Azza. As God’s breath hovered over the face of the deep in the beginning of the world, so the human spirit draws out the source of light and life through creative response to catastrophe.
