description
Join us every Thursday from 1-1:30 p.m. on the music stage on Jewishlive.org with co-hosts Rabbinical Students Shani Rosenbuam and Jackson Mercer and a guest teacher as we dive deep into a single melody, do some learning about its origins and/or the text that goes along with it, and connect from a distance through song.
Shani Rosenbaum grew up in Worcester, MA and Seattle, WA. She first experienced a “niggun seminar” in a dimly-lit basement beit midrash at Brandeis University, where she also earned her BA Near Eastern and Judaic Studies in 2012. Following a year as a Dorot Fellow in Israel, she served at several Jerusalem-based non-profits, first at Encounter cultivating constructive engagement with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; and then at OLAM, promoting Jewish involvement in global service and international development. While at OLAM, she produced and hosted the Global Torah podcast. Shani has studied at Midreshet Lindenbaum, Matan, Beit Midrash Har’el, and in the Pardes Kollel, and teaches Talmud and Rabbinic Thought through Hebrew College’s Open Circle. She currently serves as rabbinic intern at Temple Israel in Sharon and is pursuing rabbinic ordination at Hebrew College.
Jackson Mercer is an Ordination Candidate at the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in Newton, MA. He grew up at Congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael, CA where he cultivated a love of Judaism, embolden with music, spirituality and justice. He served as Rosh Shira/Rosh Tefillah at URJ Camp Newman in Santa Rosa, CA for several years. Recently he was the Musical Director at Asiyah Jewish Community in Boston and is the “Head Shadchan” at Unorthodox Celebrations.
His two newest adventures: intentional Judaica called Hiddur Mitzvah, partnering with Binah Designs to create innovative, tangible aspects of ritual and beginning work on an album of original Jewish music, “Notnim B’ahavah Reshut” set for release in Fall 2020.
