GROW is back for the new academic year! For our first program in Hebrew College Adult Learning’s free, monthly GROW series, we dive into the story of Job with instructor Adriane Leveen, PhD

We hope you will spend an hour with us for this and future programs in our series, to gather, reflect, observe, and wrestle with topics that will deepen your Jewish learning.

The Audacity of Job: Rethinking Faith in the Face of Suffering

Date: Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2025 | 12-1 PM EST/9-10 AM PST | Zoom
Program: The Audacity of Job: Rethinking Faith in the Face of Suffering
Instructor: Adriane Leveen, PhD
Cost: FREE

The biblical book of Job tells the story of a pious man, Job, who ends up losing his children and property while enduring terrible physical, emotional and spiritual suffering at the hands of a Heavenly Adversary with God’s permission. The story raises many issues that have haunted readers since, including an exploration of divine compassion or indifference in light of our suffering; what it means to be a mensch; and our relationship with the natural world. It is also a magnificent and moving account that has been read and cited by countless readers throughout the ages who have found inspiration in Job’s mettle and determination. In this High Holiday season of 2025, as we prepare ourselves for our own work of self- reflection Job offers a model of spiritual audacity who redefines what faith may mean as he dares to challenge his God.
