Hebrew College deeply mourns the passing of Rabbi David Ellenson, former Chancellor and President of HUC-JIR. Ellenson was a beloved rabbi and teacher who built bridges across all branches of Judaism; a prolific scholar; and a champion for the rights of women and L.G.B.T.Q. Jews to be ordained.

“This is a huge loss for the Jewish people, and it is also a loss that touches many of us intimately. David’s son Rafi is a beloved student in his fourth year of our rabbinic program, and many of us share deep, decades-long connections with David and his entire family. We have lost a humble giant, a great teacher, scholar, leader, and lover of Israel, and one of the most capacious and kind hearts I have ever known,” said Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld, Hebrew College President.

May his memory be a blessing.
