This course examines contemporary Israel through the intertwined lenses of war, military ethics, national trauma, community rebuilding, politics, law, society, religion, identity, antisemitism, the Diaspora, and American politics. Beginning with October 7th and the war that followed, we will explore how the events of October 7th transformed Israeli society and security assumptions, while also examining the broader political, social, and international questions that have emerged since.
Across five sessions, we will move from the immediate experience of October 7th and the war to the human cost of prolonged conflict, the challenges of rebuilding displaced communities, the Israeli political and legal systems, religious and social divisions, and Israel’s relationship with Diaspora Jewry and the United States.
The course will emphasize historical context, contemporary analysis, and competing perspectives. Participants will be encouraged to examine difficult questions without reducing them to simplistic narratives, and to consider how different Israelis and Jewish communities understand the challenges facing Israel today.
