GROW bannerJoin us online for our next Tamid of Hebrew College free GROW program on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, when Rabbi Leonard Gordon will examine two trajectories in Jewish history: the drive to build a homeland in the Land of Israel and the desire to make sense of the Jewish experience of exile and diaspora.

About the Program

Taking examples from Spain, Italy, Central and Eastern Europe, and the Caribbean, we will examine two trajectories in Jewish history: the drive to build a homeland in the Land of Israel and the desire to make sense of the Jewish experience of exile and diaspora. The conversation will explore recent and planned Hebrew College travel to some of the places Jews have seen as “home” over the millennia. How does this past help us understand ourselves as American Jews and locate ourselves in the contemporary debate on Zionism and identity.

GROW is Tamid of Hebrew College’s free, monthly adult learning program, offering an hour with us to Gather, Reflect, Observe, and Wrestle with topics that will deepen your Jewish learning.

Featured speaker

Leonard-GordonRabbi Leonard Gordon is the chair of the National Council of Synagogues (NCS) and a frequent teacher in the Tamid of Hebrew College Me’ah program since 2017. The NCS organizes interfaith dialogues between the American Jewish community and the Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox and Muslim communities. This winter he is serving as Rabbi for the Jewish Community of Barbados.

Building on his interest in the origins of secular forms of Judaism in modern times and his family history in Europe, he will be teaching about and co-leading a trip to Central Europe for Tamid this spring.

Gordon received rabbinic ordination and an MA from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He also holds a BA and M Phil from Columbia University, and an MA in Religious Studies from Brown University. In 2018, he earned a Doctor of Ministry degree in Interfaith Studies at the Andover Newton Theological School.
