Mussar is a Jewish spiritual practice that gives concrete instructions on how to live a meaningful and ethical life. Mussar is virtue-based ethics — based on the idea that by cultivating inner virtues, we improve ourselves, offering opportunities for personal transformation through a Jewish lens. This introductory monthly cohort will explore different middot (character traits). No knowledge of Hebrew or prior experience necessary.

Jewish life centers the power of narrative as a force for making meaning in the world. In this course, we will use essays by Jewish American writers as a springboard for conversations about the spiritual potential and artistic craft of creative nonfiction. Inspired by these conversations, each participant will draft a personal essay and take part in a workshop for offering and gathering revision-oriented feedback.

“Refranes” are Ladino proverbs that help paint a picture of Sephardic culture. We will look at refranes (pronounced “refranehs”) that are food-centric and cook dishes related to the refran. In this way we will explore the community each dish comes from and learn about the significance of the food, or ingredients mentioned in the particular refran.
