During the course, we will discuss the diverse cultural world of the Mizrahi communities, which spread across the Middle East and North Africa, and their descendants in Israel, Europe, and the Americas. By tracing the different stages and manifestations of Mizrahi culture from the early 20th century to today, we will explore the complex relationship between culture and politics in relation to questions regarding language, identity, nationality, borders, exile, and memory. Our exploration will start in 1948 with the establishment of the State of Israel and move on into the formative decades of Israeli society and culture. We will examine various cultural products, including fiction, music, poetry, and film, and explore the diversity of languages, genres, and geographies involved.
