The final chapters of Genesis are the most remarkable display of the subtle art of storytelling in the Torah. Joseph is, truly, the first Jew of the Diaspora, and his story encompasses many spiritual themes that speak to us today: the seductions of power, the challenges of Jewish identity in a non-Jewish society, aging parents and sibling rivalry, and striving to see the hidden hand of the Divine amidst life’s tribulations. This course will be a deep dive into the skillful work of an extraordinary author, emphasizing class discussion and supplemented by insightful background reading. (This is Part 2 of a TAMID course that began last semester, and newcomers are enthusiastically welcome.)
