Hebrew Keyboard in Mac OS 10.2+
To type text in Hebrew, you'll need to activate the Hebrew keyboard layout. If this has already been done on your computer, you should see “Hebrew” when clicking the language icon near the top right corner of your screen. (This icon will usually be an American flag.)
If you do not see Hebrew in this menu, select System Preferences in the Apple menu, located on the far left upper corner of your screen. Select International in the top row of options. Select the Input Menu tab (labeled Keyboard Menu in OS X 10.2), scroll down, and click the check box next to “Hebrew.”
While still in the Input Menu (or Keyboard Menu) area, make sure that the check boxes next to “Character Palette” and “Keyboard Viewer” are selected. These are very useful tools for viewing the Hebrew keyboard layout and for entering Hebrew vowels and other special characters.
To switch to the Hebrew keyboard, click the language icon described above and select “Hebrew.” Within this drop-down menu, you can also select the Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer. You may enter text via your keyboard while viewing the Keyboard Viewer, or by clicking on letters and vowels in the Keyboard Viewer or the Character Palette. Vowels, located in the top row of the keyboard, can be seen if you click Caps Lock. Clicking the Option key also shows the vowels, as well as the vocalized shin and sin and the shuruk. To insert vowels, place your curser to the left of the letter and click the vowel on the keyboard, the Keyboard Viewer or the Character Palette. See the following page for images of the keyboards enabled by these options.
Note that these instructions assume that you are using OS 10.2 or later, which is required for participation in HebrewCollege's online courses.
