About a dozen parents gathered around a table in the library of Congregation Beth Israel, Worcester, Mass., on June 9, listening closely as High School Director Bil Zarch explained how the community's new Prozdor satellite would work this fall. As he described the Thursday evening program, to be located at Temple Emanuelincluding dinner, a range of classes taught by Hebrew College Prozdor faculty, options for Hebrew language instruction, transportation and financial support by the Jewish Federation of Central Massachusettsand the extensive Sunday program in Newton Centre, enthusiasm grew. "We're investing a lot in this community because we want the satellite to succeed," said Zarch.
Worcester becomes the 65th community in southern New England to participate in Prozdor, and the sixth satellite site operating during the 20042005 academic yearjoining long-established sites in Lexington, Canton, Needham, Marblehead and Natick.
"We're very excited that Prozdor is going to be running our high school program," says Rabbi Paula Feldstein, acting director of the Worcester Community Hebrew High School. "The fact that it's a serious academic program was interesting to us because we've tried to maintain a high level of learning. Also, it's unifying for us that there are no turf issues," she says.
