Expectations of children, obligations to parents; expectations of parents, obligations to children. How classical texts and Jewish traditions frame the requisites and boundaries of the parent-child relationship—and how psychological and spiritual insights from those texts can inform clinical social work practice—is the focus of a three-part seminar series co-sponsored by the Simmons School of Social Work and Hebrew College this spring.
“L’Dor V’Dor: Relationships through the Family Life Cycle” speaks to the centrality of family and the multigenerational dimensions of the Jewish community. “As people grow older, their interactions with the community change,” says Dr. Barry Mesch, Provost of Hebrew College. “With all of the pressures and identity issues in American society, how does the Jewish piece play out?”
Seminar topics include “Parents and Adult Children,” “The Power of Repentance and Forgiveness” and “Diversity Within the Jewish Family.” Each seminar will be led by a Hebrew College faculty member and a licensed social worker, including professors at the Simmons School of Social Work and professionals in the Jewish community. Instructors from HC include Dr. Jacob Meskin, Assistant Professor of Education; Dr. Solomon Schimmel, Professor of Jewish Education and Psychology; and Rabbi Sharon Cohen Anisfeld, Dean of the Rabbinical School.
The series is geared toward both the Jewish community and clinical social workers with an interest in Judaism. Seminars take place April 16, May 14 and June 12 at Hebrew College, 7:00–9:30 p.m. Social work continuing education units (CEUs) will be awarded for a registration fee of $40 per event. Regular registration is $18 per event.
