Visions of the Artist as a Jewish Woman

L'Dor V'Dor-from generation to generation-implies continual change; as generations evolve, there is always forward movement. Curator Deborah Davidson selected 20 artists who best captured this theme for L'Dor V'Dor, a Jewish Women Artists Network (JWAN) Juried Exhibition, opening in Hebrew College's Goldman Gallery on January 30 and running through March 31.

"Each artist expresses herself as a woman and as a Jew; often these intersect, one lens inexorably informing the other," notes Davidson in her curator's statement.

Through photography, printmaking, sculpture, weaving and digital media, some of the artists interpret personal stories, memories and family history, while others are inspired by the retelling of biblical text from generation to generation or the paintings of past women artists.

On Monday, February 20, the L'Dor V'Dor exhibition will be the first stop on the National Conference Gallery bus tour for the National Women's Caucus for Art (WCA). Rona Lesser, President of jwan, an internal caucus of the wca, will speak, and a light dinner will be served. From Hebrew College, the tour continues to exhibits at Mayyim Hayyim and Brandeis University. The Hebrew College community is invited to meet the artists at a reception on Thursday, March 23, from 7-9 p.m. For more information on either of these events, please contact Miriam Gilman at 617-969-6623 or miriamgilman@rcn.com.
