As a child in Dorchester, Mass., Harriet J. Winer began her fundraising career organizing a series of five-cent children's plays and donating the proceedsfive dollars in pennies and nickelsto the Jimmy Fund. Decades later, with a business model in hand, Hebrew College's new Vice President for Leadership Gifts now aims to enlist support from donors across the country in the six- and seven-figure range.
"To efficiently support this campaign, we need to reach out beyond the region," says President David Gordis. "Harriet's presence will broaden our reach to national constituents." With the College ramping up to raise $70 million over the next five years to fund campus expansion and new programs for the second phase of the College's $100 million capital campaign, Winer's appointment is part of a strategic reorganization of the Department of Development. In August, Al Effrat was named National Vice President for Development, and in April, Jonathan Kappel joined the department as Director of the Campaign for Hebrew College and David Chivo was promoted to Director of Development.
Winer comes with more than 25 years of development, management and communications experience in private and nonprofit organizations ranging from the Brandeis University National Womens Committee, where she served as its executive director for eight years, to the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. For the past ten years she has also run a
consulting practice for nonprofits to maximize their fundraising potential, and her clients have included the National Tay Sachs Foundation, Mount Auburn Hospital and the Asian American Civic Association.
